A week ago, LUSU Sports headed south to Surrey Indoor Tennis Centre to deliver the Inclusive CPD, written by LUSU Sports, as part of the LTA Level 4 Coach Education pathway.
The CPD explored a range of important topics, including neurodiversity in tennis, long-term health conditions, care home tennis and Para Standing Tennis.
It was fantastic to work with such a motivated group of coaches, who embraced the opportunity to use the STEP framework and think outside the box. The focus was on adapting the environment, equipment and activity to allow the player to explore, make choices and, ultimately, let the drills and equipment do the teaching.
Using a variety of balls and rackets, while giving players the autonomy to select the equipment that works for them, can create powerful learning opportunities. It helps develop an understanding of ball flight, movement and spatial awareness, while also encouraging independence and problem-solving.
A huge thank you to the LTA for the opportunity to work with coaches on their development pathway and, importantly, for creating space for inclusive coaching to have such a prominent place within the Level 4 programme.
Inclusion isn't about changing the person — it's about changing the environment, the approach and the possibilities.
