Wow what a fantastic few days LUSU had at the Special Olympics in Sheffield, EIS, August 2017. LUSU was invited to assist and provide equipment for the MATP (Motor Activities Training Programme) ‘Come & Try Event’ and the ‘Challenge Day’. When we arrived, we knew this would be a special few days, but we didn’t expect to be quite as inspired by the athletes and volunteers who really demonstrated that the joy of sport transforms peoples’ lives.
There was such an infectious buzz from all the volunteers meeting the athletes, coaches and supporters, and the excitement from the MATP hall, drew athletes in from the surrounding halls to come and try the activities. It was great to see the smiles get bigger and eyes light up on the athletes in the MATP room, everyone gave the activities a go and there was an activity for everyone and every ability.
An added bonus for LUSU was watching the children and young adults enjoying using the LUSUKIT and having the opportunity to discuss with the personal assistants, coaches and supporters how to continue to develop skills using fun and physical activity as a tool.
A BIG thank you to Dr Niamh Riley and Angela Lydon for the opportunity to be involved, and we look forward to working with you in the future.
